Many have turned to cannabis for insomnia, including myself. Before I even knew about the medicinal benefits of marijuana, I knew that cannabis gave me a restful night’s sleep. Pharmaceuticals such as zopiclone are heavily addictive and can cause lifelong damage if used incorrectly.

Cannabis is a natural medicine and has the ability to reduce stress-levels and physically relax your body, therefore, it is no surprise that medical cannabis can help with the treatment of insomnia. Many people already know the benefits of cannabis regarding sleep and relaxation. But did you know that dried cannabis will make you sleepier than fresh plant material? This is due to the ageing process of cannabis which slowly turns THC into another cannabinoid called cannabinol or CBN.

CBN contains sedative properties. In various studies since the 1970s surrounding THC and sleep, patients experienced longer and deeper sleep. Not to mention improved breathing whilst they were sleeping. Also, this study found that it was easier for the patients to fall asleep due to their body becoming physically relaxed. This benefit of medical cannabis can make it easier for healthy people, as well as insomniacs, to fall asleep.

Cannabis Terpenes That Help Insomnia

With so many different strains available, many of which are the same but under different names, terpenes are becoming more important to distinguish what effects you will actually get from marijuana.

In the future, I personally envision a world in which terpene profiles are vastly more important than strains.

An example of this would be buying a vape cart in the future that is full of terpenes for a specific ailment. If a cannabis patient were to suffer from insomnia, they would look for terpene profiles including:

Mycrene

  • The Ability To Release Opiates Inside The Human Body Without Need For Opiate Pills
  • Relieves Pain Through Analgesic Properties
  • Can Act As A Natural Sedative

Lanalool

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Pain Reliever
  • Evidence Lanalool Can Act As Anticonvulsant and Natural Sedative

Terpineol

  • Pain Reliever/Anti-Inflammatory
  • Sedating Effects

The CB1 Receptors (Endocannabinoid System)

CB1 cannabinoid receptors were first cloned by scientists in 1990. These CB1 receptors are found in the brain, spinal cord, white blood cells, and endocrine gland.

CB1 receptors can be found in some organs, like the spleen, and tissue. Additonally, CB1 receptors are found in the gastrointestinal, reproductive, and urinary tract systems of other mammals such as cats and dogs.

Also, CB1 receptors are thought to have an effect on pain and sleep and they are also responsible for the psychoactive effect of cannabis.

NORML, claims that the endocannabioind system is the, “most important physiologic system involved in maintaining human health”. The endocannabinoid system and cannabinoid receptors in the body help to explain why some plants have natural healing properties.

Even our pets can benefit from their own endocannabinoid systems!

Before prohibiton, marijuana was used as a common natural medicine for headaches and other ailments. The benefits of marijuana and hemp have been known for centuries. The past 100 years of illegality has really hurt the research into cannabis as a beneficial medicine.

Many individuals who explore marijuana as medicine neglect to consider pure hemp CBD products. This type of product can become an amazing remedy, not only for anxiety, but many other ailments too. For those who experience more anxiety when consuming marijuana, consider hemp CBD.

No one is claiming that cannabis is a cure, or may even help you at all, but, marijuana may be worth exploring for more people.
