Different Types of Cannabis Concentrates: Cloudy Kitchen Concentrates Guide

The very first cannabis concentrates were made my rubbing cannabis plant material together over 12,000 years ago; The oldest known trace of hashish production was discovered in the Steppe Mountains of China and dates back to 10,000 B.C!

Cannabis concentrates are booming in North America right now. The convenience and potency of different types of cannabis concentrates available make them an ideal cannabis substance to vape, mix with edibles, and smoke or dab.

Concentrates can be made in many different ways, some are as easy as collecting kief in a 3-chamber grinder and others require a hydraulic press.

Whatever cannabis concentrate you decide to consume, it is incredibly important that the individual realizes that concentrates are much stronger than regular cannabis. For example, on average, cannabis will have approximately 15-20% THC. In different types of cannabis concentrates, the THC levels can reach over 90%.

Firstly, learn about the different types of extraction techniques below, then, we will provide information about the different types of cannabis concentrates.

Different Types of Extraction For Cannabis Concentrates

There are two types of cannabis concentrates extraction, solvent extraction and non-solvent:

Solvent-Based Extraction

Butane (BHO) Extraction – Marijuana Concentrates

If your cannabis concentrate contains the word BHO, then the product has been extracted using butane. Butane extraction offers a vast range of highly potent products such as shatter, budder/wax, and more. Butane extraction is extremely dangerous (can explode) and this type of extraction should NEVER be attempted at home.

Co2 Extraction -Cannabis Concentrates

CO2 concentrates use a combination of pressure and temperature to extract elements of dried marijuana flower. Extractors using CO2 can control the rate at which terpenes and cannabinoids are extracted through the fine control of temperature. An elite CO2 cannabis extractions system can cost $1 million!

Propane (PHO) Extraction – Marijuana Concentrates

This method is similar to the BHO cannabis concentrate extraction, but propane offers a lower boiling point. In essence, the lower boiling point of the PHO creates a method that preserves terpenes and allows for faster purging. Also, PHO cannabis concentrates are widely considered to have a cleaner taste.

Isopropyl Alcohol Extraction – Cannabis Concentrates

This method requires precise temperature control but is considered one of the safest methods. Many do-it-yourself cannabis concentrate artisans will use a method known as QWISO (Quick Wash Isopropyl). On a larger scale, ethanol is used as the recovery rate for ethanol is much higher and it can be re-used in this process.

Non-Solvent Extractions

Heat And Water Extraction – Cannabis Concentrates

Heat and water are also used to extract valuable terpenes and cannabinoids from plant materials. Non-solvent cannabis concentrates are highly touted for their flavour profiles and clean hits.

Pressure Extraction – Cannabis Concentrates

Pressure extracted cannabis concentrates such as rosin have become especially popular in recent times. This method involves pressing dried cannabis in a hydraulic press and gathering the resulting waxy-oil that is produced.

The Cloudy Kitchen Guide to The Different Types of Cannabis Concentrates

As you can see below, there are many different types of concentrates, some of which can be made using all, or some, of the extraction methods outlined above.

Wax/Budder

Wax/budder has a very sticky texture and almost resembles ear wax! This type of cannabis concentrate is especially simple to use. For example, when rolling a joint, spread some wax on the inside of the paper before place cannabis inside the rolling paper. Vaping and dabs with wax/budder are also incredibly smooth

Hash – Finger Rub, Traditional, Dry Ice, Bubble Hash

Hand/finger rub hash has been popular in the Middle East and Asia for centuries. As mentioned, the oldest known evidence of hashish production was found in China and dates back over 12,000 years.

A Small Piece of My Moroccan Hash.

Traditional hash, such as Morrocan, is made by dry-sifting cannabis flower material and then pressed into bricks. Afghani hashish bricks are made by placing cannabis into water or tea to separate the resin, which is then pressed.

Live Resin

Live resin involves freezing a live cannabis plant and then extracting the THC resin. This method is incredibly complicated and requires a laboratory, along with the appropriate equipment.

Kief

Kief is the most easily accessed concentrate for many people. Kief is best collected in a 3-chamber grinder. Kief is a great addition to any joint, bong, or pipe of regular cannabis.

Shatter

Shatter is a highly refined cannabis extract. This cannabis extract is made with a pressure vacuum shatter is usually amber/brown in colour. Shatter, on average, contains approximately 90% THC, which had lead to increased popularity of this concentrate.

Distillate

Distillate, also known as Phoenix tears, terp gravy etc, can contain 90-99% THC! THC distillates are made using a non-solvent extraction process and are usually found in a device that makes dosing incredibly simple.

Rosin

Rosin has become especially popular in the past few years due to the fact it is less potent than other concentrates and is a valuable day-time medicine for many.

Honeycomb

Using a closed-loop extraction system, the cannabis plant material is sprayed with solvent and then the resulting product is placed into a vacuum oven. After leaving the oven, the product is pressed, giving it a honeycomb look.
