Which Fats Absorb The Most THC?
The consistency of lab results is a major problem in the cannabis world, with different labs bringing different results, a lot more comprehensive study is needed. Not to mention, the variables (potency, how long you cook for etc) involved in producing cannabis-infused oils.
According to a recent High Times Magazine experiment involving lab testing, butter came out on top in terms of absorbing THC.
The experiment used just 3.5 grams of cannabis per one cup of fat and here are the results from one lab:
Butter – 2.58mg of THC Per Gram – 469MG of THC Per Cup
Olive Oil – 2.15mg of THC Per Gram – 406MG of THC Per Cup
What About The Other Fats? Which Fats Absorb The Most THC?
Coconut Oil/Bacon Fat consistently ranked third from all labs, and Avocado Oil usually ranked last in terms of THC content.
As we can see, per gram, butter comes out on top. Although the differences seem somewhat minimal, over 2-3 cups of oil, these differences are quite large.
These lab tests indicated that 1 full cup of this particular butter would contain almost 470mg of THC. Obviously, these results depend on the potency of your cannabis, as well as how long you infuse your fats for.
One surprising conclusion from this experiment was the fact that leaving the fat and cannabis cooking together for longer gives minimal returns in terms of THC content (if any).
Another observation was the fact that many of these cannabis-infused fats contained the cannabinoid THC-a. This cannabinoid is a precursor to THC, however, it is non-psychoactive, and may hold valuable medicinal qualities related to inflammation and nerve protection.
4 hours is an appropriate amount of time to infuse fats with THC, either is a slow-cooker, pot, or in the oven.
Butter, coconut oil, and olive oil are the best options when infusing your fats with cannabis.
