What is a cannabis coach? The phrase caught my eye immediately when I first saw it, and I knew I had to find out more.

I reached out to a cannabis coach recently. His name is Jacob and he lives in Washington in the United States.

Firstly, I just want to thank Jacob personally for such a great interview and for being a human guinea pig for this section of Cloudy Kitchen!

Cloudy Kitchen: First of All, What Is A Cannabis Coach?

Jacob: As a cannabis coach, my main work is to help people use cannabis in an effective and efficient way, shortcutting all the guesswork, to help them achieve their desired result. I guide people through the process, and hold the space for them to grow and become, at their own pace. Many of my clients have business, personal, and health goals – all of which we address and work on together. One of my favourite aspects is pairing cannabis with nurturing your inner child and boosting creativity and energy!

One of Your Success Stories With a Patient/Client

One of the first people I worked with was homeless and jobless, and now they are in school, in a place, and have their own business!

Cloudy Kitchen: Why Did You Pursue a Job as a Cannabis Coach?

Being a cannabis coach combines many things I enjoy into one package. I love that I get to leverage a holistic, sustainable solution to meet several needs of many people. I like nature, people, the community, the Earth; this work honours all of those. I believe in the healing power of cannabis – medically, socially, economically, environmentally, etc… Anything I can do to further ‘the cause’ is a joy to me.

Cloudy Kitchen: When Did You Enter The Cannabis Industry?

Um, that’s a little tough to answer definitively: if you mean in an ‘official’, ‘sanctioned’ capacity, then quite recently – April of 2018; if you mean in a broader, more inclusive, ‘underground’ sense, then probably back in like 2012, 2013? But honestly, I’ve been reading and networking and advocating and learning about marijuana since I was 14.

Cloudy Kitchen: How Do You Explain Cannabis To Your Family?

I don’t have a wife or kids, but all of my family smokes marijuana, so it’s more an ongoing discussion of mutual interest, rather than a discussion of the ‘secret’ in my life.

Cloudy Kitchen What Is Your Favourite Way To Consume Cannabis?

Smoking blunts is my favourite in groups; if I’m alone then dabs feel more efficient; I’m currently playing more and more with ‘alchemy’ – making tinctures/elixirs and also infused oil/butter to cook with, then gonna learn topicals.

Cloudy Kitchen: What Is The Cannabis Culture Like in Washington?

Legally, it seems powers that be have sent marijuana down the path that liquor has gone in this state, with similar attitudes in law enforcement and taxation. Socially, it’s become quite pervasive, commonplace, and acceptable (more or less). Seattle does tend to play up the ‘luxury’ side of things in many of their stores, while Tacoma seems to be fiercely competitive, with a few stores engaged in ‘text deal wars’ with one another. ‘Cannabis clubs’ are still banned, but I’ve heard of private underground parties where someone will host an ‘edibles meal’ or things like that.

Cloudy Kitchen: Finally, Do You Have Any Advice For People Looking To Enter The Cannabis Industry?

Yes, aim high and focus! It’s fine if you’re deciding between fast food/retail/box store and a dispensary, go for the dispensary, you’ll love it! But if your ambitions are higher, then be careful how long you spend as a ‘grunt’ and don’t get trapped there! Be looking for ways to stand out, and to play to your individuality. Basically, be careful how starry-eyed you get about ‘working in the industry’ and don’t just settle for the first just-above-minimum-wage cannabis-related job that comes to you!

Thanks again for the interview Jacob, you’re doing great work!
